When working with reprogramming your subconscious mind it is important to consider optimizing the format of the data you are inputting; you need to use language that your subconscious will understand and that is relevant to your specific goal/issue.

Pay Close Attention to Your Thoughts

My first recommendation is to pay close attention to your thoughts throughout the day. Many people wake up in the morning, look into the mirror and say something to the extent of “Today is going to be great! I love myself! I am a winner! I am awesome etc.”, they may repeat this affirmation several times and say it with enthusiasm. However, the other 99.9% of their day is often spent thinking negatively, critically, or simply not in a way that is congruent with their goals (useless or pointless thoughts/judgements). Your subconscious will look at which thought is stronger and more consistent. Practicing mindfulness is the first step to consciously choosing the thoughts you want to feed your subconscious.  

Reprogramming your beliefs

Let’s say you’ve done your homework and you are ready to reprogram your subconscious beliefs (refer back to my other articles for the previous steps to doing this). You have to first look at the belief you want to change and know what it is, and keep the new belief in the same syntax/sentence structure. For example, if your current belief is “Nobody cares about me”, you wouldn’t want your new belief to be “I am finding it very wonderful now that everywhere I go, many people are always showing they enjoy being around me and they make effort to make me feel I am cared for”; while I don’t think it would hurt to say that by any means, it is far too different from your current belief to create smooth and efficient change. Be mindful to keep the new belief in the same syntax, so you would want the new affirmation to look more like “People do care about me”. Or “I allow people to care about me” etc. This is very important to consider when you want to reprogram something specific, it only makes logical sense to address it specifically and honor the language your subconscious is using.

Forming Your Affirmation

When forming an affirmation, I like to encourage clients not to go for a “home run” unless you are sure you can do so, but rather, it is more useful to just “run the bases”. On the off chance you don’t understand baseball references, what I am saying is slow and steady does indeed win the race. If you try to shoot too high and it isn’t possible for you to accept this new belief, you won’t move an inch. It is more effective to climb the ladder, to move your beliefs up gradually in a way that is easier to process and accept. The magic word for this is “willingness”, it is safest to always add this word into your affirmations whenever possible unless you are completely sure you don’t need to do so. An example: if you say to your subconscious “I chose to now be rich and attract piles of money!” It may very well reject that; if you affirm “I am willing to be rich, I deserve to be rich, I am willing to take the steps to become rich, I am willing to have piles of money etc.” this will add in a buffer that allows your subconscious to absorb the idea because it isn’t being stretched too far from its original thought. There will be times when you can make a quantum leap, but the majority of the time this is the place to start.  

Be clear

Be very careful as well not to confuse your subconscious, this part most certainly confuses people. Let’s say you are physically ill and you try and reprogram your mind to say “I am in perfect health”. Your subconscious will not normally instantly “poof” you into perfect health, (which is what people like to think) it will look at you and go “really, how is this perfect health?!” This is because your lack of health is not likely caused by a particular belief that you should be unhealthy, it is most often caused by abuse to the body or mind (poor diet, ingestion of contagious germs, internalized emotions etc.). You may, however, develop a belief that says you will always remain unhealthy, which gives you the sensation of having zero motivation to change your situation. It would be far more useful and sensible to reprogram “I am willing to be healthy, I am taking action to become healthy, I am healing each day because of my actions, I am honoring and nurturing my body, I no longer need to stay sick, I am motived to heal myself etc.”. Another classic example is where people sit there and say to themselves “I am now peaceful”, you won’t get any results from doing this because what you actually need to reprogram are the steps to becoming peaceful.

I hope you can see the difference, take time to think about your particular issue and what will be most sensible to reprogram, and consider what will be more practical in generating the result that you desire.
